The Santa Project

Das Weihnachtsmannprojekt
This year will be different, Paul’s mother declares: we’re going to have a quiet Christmas without the relatives! Grandma is appalled, and Paul’s little sister Frida is furious. As if that weren’t enough, Frida’s teacher says there’s no Santa! Paul can’t bear to see Frida disappointed – he’s determined to prove that there really is a Santa. On top of that, somehow he’s got to pull his family together and make sure they have a real Christmas. But that’s easier said than done . . .  Funny, spirited and original, here’s a Christmas story for reading – and reading aloud – for the whole family.

What greater delight for a child than to lie sprawled out on the floor in front of a big picture-book, with hundreds of familiar and unfamiliar things to discover? Rotraut Susanne Berner has designed just such a book whose large-format pictures show a whole town and its surroundings: a house for several families, a farm, a rail way station, a community centre, a market place, a multi storey department store, and a large park. These pictures tell many little stories of things that happen to people and animals on a spring day, and every child can follow these stories. And since there are plenty of stories to tell about this town throughout the year Rotraut Susanne Berner designed a book for each season. So now everybody can discover for himself how life in the town and its surroundings changes over the year: What kind of games children play and how long it takes for the construction work on the new nursery to be completed.

Nacht-Wimmelbuch - Midi
Wimmlingen at Night - The latest marvel from Rotraut Susanne Berner Rotraut Susanne Berner's Wimmlingen at Night Nighttime in Wimmlingen: Humans and animals are sleeping. Most of them, that is. Andrea, for one, cannot sleep because Thomas, who lives on the next floor, is taking a shower. Nico, on the other hand, is fast asleep in his cage, in the dark under its cloth cover. Outside, bats are flitting about, and a hedgehog shuffles through the grass. There's an all-night reading marathon taking place at the Public Library, and in the upper floor, the terrariums of the reptile exposition emit a greenish glow. At the station the night train is ready for departure. Even though not all that many people are about at night, yet there is a lot going on in this warm summer night. Under cover of darkness, a burglar breaks into a dentist's surgery. Will he make his escape undetected? A night-watchman and his dog are on their round patrolling the local department store. Yet the highlight and concluding episode of this particular adventure must surely be the big festival in the municipal park, complete with fireworks. As in her four previous books set in Wimmlingen, Rotraut Susanne Berner has once more come up with a cornucopia of little stories, rich in well-observed detail, an atmospheric nocturne that will make for splendid bedtime reading, for big and small alike.

So Mina organizes a nursing home visiting service – not an easy assignment for a class that even the school psychologist avoids. There they sit cozily, the three sparrows on their branch, despite the snow and the cold, trusting that one day soon they'll fly again in the springtime sun. . .

A Year with the Sparrows

Ein Jahr mit den Spatzen
They prefer to cavort in groups, clamour loudly and curiously explore their environment - sparrows are like children, and that is perhaps why children like these cheeky birds so much! With this wonderfully illustrated picture book, we accompany the sparrows through the year, are present during the search for a suitable nesting site and experience how the sparrow babies hatch from the eggs. They soon go on a discovery tour and, like their parents, like to forage in the middle of the city - until they finally have to look for a nesting site themselves in spring. As in his non-fiction picture book Ein Jahr mit den Schwalben (A Year with the Swallows), Thomas Müller also describes the sparrows' habitat in a child-friendly way in this unusual book about sparrows and illustrates the view into the sparrows' world with lovingly drawn pictures.

When August gets tired, Julia sits on his bed and tucks him in. Back in school, Julia's thoughts often return to August. One afternoon in October Julia and her mother return to Gross Neuendorf. The male owl is following purringly the female one. He wants to win her over and show her his nesting site in the church spire. “ With expert, feather-light brushstrokes, Thomas Müller acquaints us with the lives of this mysterious and beautiful bird. An important topic for young children, presented with humor and with brightly colored, sometimes surprising, illustrations by Daniela Kulot

A Year With the Cranes

Ein Jahr mit den Kranichen
What’s making that loud noise in the sky above? It’s the cranes migrating to their winter home. How thrilling it is when thousands of these birds pass through in the fall, and we have a chance to study them while they gather the strength to fly further south. In this book we take a close look at the “good luck” birds, and we follow a family of cranes throughout the year – their elaborate courtship dances, how they raise their young, and their first journey together as a family: the great Crane Migration. Jakob's Shell

Jakobs Muschel
When Jakob holds his shell to his ear, he hears the sound of the ocean. And when he closes his eyes, he can even see it. One day, while he’s sitting on the jungle gym between the apartment buildings, who shows up but Jonas — Jonas the cool kid with the expensive tennis and sharp tongue who always picks on him. Quick as a flash, Jonas swipes Jakob’s shell. While Jonas takes one look down and, frightened of falling, holds on tight with both hands, Jacob closes his eyes, listens to the reclaimed shell, and suddenly he can see him: Jonny the pirate, the notorious thief of the high seas. With that wart on his nose, he sure looks a lot like Jonas. A storm closes in and the pirate ship goes down. Unfortunately not all of the pirates can swim. Does Jonas know how? A humorous story about little tough guys, big dreamers, and the power of the imagination. (One might consider changing the names to more similar English spellings: Jacob, Jonas, Johnny)

Night-Wimmelbook

Nacht-Wimmelbuch

Pretty Darn Boring!

Ganz schön langweilig!
A little bear trots through the forest and isn’t quite sure where to go. He’s bored and no one has time for him- everyone’s busy. At last, he lies down on the forest floor and decides to do nothing- absolutely nothing. And even though he isn’t occupied, lots of things are happening. Slowly but surely he begins to feel calm and his senses begin to awaken. He begins to pay attention to the sounds around him and to feel, see, sense, and discover more and more. His head feels free, his curiosity is awakened, and lots of new ideas begin to come to him. Entertained and restored, he starts off on his next adventure. In a time in which even kindergartners need weekly planners and everyone always has something to do (at least on a tablet or the like), Henrike Wilson remembers the value and necessity of boredom and free, unstructured time, and pays homage to these with vivid visuals. The ability to enjoy aimless time can be so fulfilling.

Kleine Schwester, große Schwester
Ada is still small. Small ears, small nose, small hands, small feet. Just like a little sister. And as it is with little sisters, their little heads are full of big ideas. On Monday, Ada decides that she would rather be a little elephant. With a big trunk. On Tuesday, she wishes she had the matching elephant ears to go with it, and so it continues merrily through the week. But suddenly, when something goes wrong for Ada the elephant, she's gone or is she? Julie Völk tells the story of two sisters in clear, reduced images with bright color accents. In doing so, she cleverly combines "pretend play" with the relationship between the two. As clear and focused as the story is, as strong is the homage to play and the childlike imagination.

In this atmospheric non-fiction picture book, we watch as the small harbor porpoise takes his first breath. We come along as he explores the mysterious underwater world, encounters sea urchins, shipwrecks, and squid, and hunts herring (yikes - be careful of the Orca!). As the little whale grows up, he goes on his first long journey north to Norway before returning to his homeland, and then even starts a family of his own in the maritime area off of the island Sylt. This unusual picture book with its large-scale illustrations introduces us to these special and, sadly, endangered marine animals. We learn a lot about their habitat, mating.

Five Nuts, Squirreled Away

Fünf Nüsse für Eichhörnchen
It's fall! The leaves whirl in the wind and the squirrel is beginning to stockpile nuts for the winter. So far, five nuts have been gathered. The squirrel wants to hide them where no one will find them. It does so with great enthusiasm and finds excellent hiding spots. However, it was working with such zeal that it, unlike the reader, didn't notice that other animals were watching the whole time. When winter comes and everything's covered by a thick blanket of snow, the cheerful little squirrel tries to gather its nuts—only to find that the first four have apparently grown legs and escaped! Luckily the fifth and best nut (the one with the tiny hat!) is still there in its fantastic hiding place. So it's no problem that the other animals helped themselves to his supply. A book about the art of finding pleasure in what you do have instead of worrying about what you don't. But this is also a story about garden animals and the changing of the seasons, with all its many marvels—lovingly told with atmospheric illustrations by Henrike Wilson.

And she highlights basic facts – about penguins but also the plants and animals of Antarctica, whose icy homeland has rich historical significance.

The False Life

Das falsche Leben
Life in Divided Germany Hannover 1979. The bags are packed, the school is notified – Thomas, 16 years old, is literally ready at the drop of a hat to move with his family to the German Democratic Republic. The reason for the hasty move is not his terminally ill grandfather in Usedom, as his father has claimed. It is the Cold War era, rife with espionage in the East and West alike. Thomas‘ father is a spy whose role was uncovered in a failed mission, and who must now return to the GDR. Thomas finds himself living a false life in East Berlin. He attends a school governed by the state security agency that requires flag oaths and military instruction. All the family’s attempts to return to the West fail. Then Thomas and his parents end up in the notorious state prison Bautzen II . . . A true story by Maja Nielsen from the time of the divided Germany. Like Nielsen’s successful novel THE TUNNEL CONSTRUCTOR it’s dense and suspenseful.

Ready, Set, Go to Daycare!

In die Kita, fertig, los!
Running, Racing, Dashing to Daycare In the morning it’s time for daycare – but how does one get there? On the kiddie seat of a bicycle? Walking? Pulled in a wagon? By bike it’s cosy -- you can doze along the way and giggle together at the bike rack. Riding on the bus is fun, especially when your favourite stuffed animal is in the seat next to you and Grandpa is there to make sure you get off at the right stop. On foot there is lots to see, and by scooter you can race like the wind. Some even come to daycare by sled or by boat! The best thing of all is that everyone arrives, happy to share the day together. In playful rhyme, Cornelia Boese recounts the many ways of getting to daycare, and Julia Dürr’s illustrations set the scene of each day‘s bracing morning routine with affection and humor.
