1,2,3,...A Sack Full of Buttons

1, 2, 3...ein Sack voller Knöpfe
Button by button, Sabine Lohf and Yvonne Hergane help to make the Advent season before Christmas go by quickly. Lots of buttons have fallen out of Santa’s big sack, and now they’re being put to use as wheels for a puppet carriage, as eyes for a teddy bear, or for a funny snowball
fight. On each day of advent a button is added, until 24 of them decorate the Christmas tree.

Sabine Lohf has created tongue-in-cheek illustrations for Yvonne Hergane’s clever rhymes. This book is not only great for counting but also offers many colourful ideas for Christmas time: making button garlands, painting wishlists, polishing Santa’s boots, and much more.

Alexander von Humboldt

Alexander von Humboldt
Wanderlust, an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and enough energy for two lives: Alexander von Humboldt was the greatest traveler and most famous scientist of his time.
The "true discoverer of America” climbed the highest volcanoes, navigated unmapped rivers, discovered the flora and fauna of exotic lands, inspired contemporaries such as Goethe and Darwin, and exchanged ideas with the American president Thomas Jefferson and the freedom fighter Simón Bolívar. This fancifully illustrated book invites us to play the role of Humboldt's traveling companion and lets us marvel at the vast array of life this famous scientist helped to reveal.

All the Money in the World

Alles Geld der Welt
A world without money is hard to imagine. Every nation has its own currency. And our everyday lives, whether we’re at home, shopping or enjoying leisure time -- are marked by daily exchanges of money.

But what is money really? Coins, bills, something stored in the bank? What about something complicated, like cryptocurrencies? Money is a huge subject. Who invented it, and when and why? What was trade like before money? And why is money divided up so unequally?

Ever since money has existed, there have been arguments about what it is. A means to an end, or an end in itself? A thing, or an idea? A blessing or a curse? There has been every possible explanation.

And yet, money remains a puzzle.

With the help of this entertaining but informative graphic nonfiction book, at last we can begin to understand this puzzle and perhaps even become skilled money managers!

Armin the bookseller

Armin, der Buchhändler
Everyone knows Armin. He is the bookseller in Wimmlingen. There are lots of great books to buy from him. One day Petra tells him that at night the characters from the books come to life. Yes, and what happens when Little Red Riding Hood, Pinocchio and many other children's book heroes have a midnight party in Armin's shop is shown in this rhymed story by Rotraut Susanne Berner.
Einar Turkowski: Aus dem Schatten trat ein Fuchs
Einar Turkowski

Out of the shadows stepped a Fox

Aus dem Schatten trat ein Fuchs
“Out of the shadows crept a fox”... this is how Einar Turkowski's new masterpiece begins. For the first time ever, he combines his unique pencil drawings with colour. He takes the viewer on a search for happiness in his very own visual language. The fox roams through the night and a bird of paradise joins him. Both are colourful, both are looking for something, and neither one is quite sure where he’s going.
The landscape sometimes seems enchanted and reassuring, other times forbidding and threatening.
The night is still young, still long. But the more it advances, the more power it gains. The wanderers are close to losing heart and close to giving in to the dark mood. But the colour has been waiting to be found. It shows itself and gives the fox new courage for facing life. And the bird? He too finds his place and enchants us with his sad songs.

Balto and Togo - The Run to Nome

Balto & Togo
Alaska, 1925. In the dead of winter, an epidemic has taken hold in the small city of Nome. Isolated as it is by snow and ice, the only way the city can obtain much-needed medication is by dogsled.
For 650 miles dog drivers and their teams of sled dogs, depending completely on each other, fight heavy snow and ice storms in a race against time. The “Serum Run to Nome”, as this real event became known, captured the world’s attention well beyond the Alaskan border.

Lena Zeise’s retelling and illustrations of this true story of wilderness survival makes a breathtaking tale of companionship, courage and the unique bond between the dog drivers and their teams.

Until the Stars Tremble

Bis die Sterne zittern
Leipzig, 1936. On the first day of the summer holidays,
16-year-old Harro gets into a fight with members of the
Hitler Youth. He unexpectedly gets help from like-minded
people who, like him, want nothing to do with the Nazi
ideology. In the year that follows, everything changes for
Harro. Conflicts with his parents and trouble at school,
nights at campfires, political action, first love – and above
all, the fear that his wild activities might have dangerous
consequences.
The "Leipzig Meuten", a group of oppositional youth gangs,
inspired Johannes Herwig’s debut. His discussion of growing
up in a dictatorship is powerful, thrilling, and emotional.
The questions he poses are as applicable now as
they were then: should one participate, should one quietly
adjust, or should one resist?

The Dinosaur at the Rock. The Adventures of the First Bone Hunters.

Der Dinosaurier im Fels
Who discovered Tyrannosaurus rex?

A twelve-year old girl stands alone on the rough cliffs of southern England and taps rhythmically with a hammer against the rock; two renowned scientists compete for a discovery in a »fight to the bones«; one day, a young adventurer peeks into the empty eye sockets of a Tyrannosaurus rex... this book tells the suspenseful stories of the first fossil hunters. At a time when most people still believed that the Earth was just a few thousand years old, and few imagined that giant prehistoric lizards once ruled the planet, these hardy pioneering researchers were literally prying dinosaur bones out of the rock – and proving just the opposite to a skeptical world.
With many illustrations, fossil and research profiles, and appendices.

With this wonderfully illustrated picture book, we accompany the sparrows through the year, are present during the search for a suitable nesting site and experience how the sparrow babies hatch from the eggs. They soon go on a discovery tour and, like their parents, like to forage in the middle of the city - until they finally have to look for a nesting site themselves in spring. As in his non-fiction picture book Ein Jahr mit den Schwalben (A Year with the Swallows), Thomas Müller also describes the sparrows' habitat in a child-friendly way in this unusual book about sparrows and illustrates the view into the sparrows' world with lovingly drawn pictures.

A Year with the Storks

Ein Jahr mit den Störchen
Who doesn’t know and love this elegant red-stockinged bird? In many countries the stork is considered a bearer of good luck. In this illustrated nonfiction book we get to know “Master Adebar” very well as we accompany him on his journey through the year: we see how he builds his nest on the roof of the barn in springtime and how he then raises the hatched chicks with his mate. Then we tag along with the young storks as they fly to Africa for the winter and accompany them a couple of months later on their dangerous return home.
With expert, feather-light brushstrokes, Thomas Müller acquaints us with the lives of this large and beautiful bird. The narrative section is supplemented with additional valuable information about black storks, cranes and herons.

Eric, the Viking Boy

Erik, der Wikingerjunge
A farm on the Baltic Sea, ca. 950. Erik‘s brother Leif, who took off on a Viking voyage months ago ready for adventure and hungry for loot, still hasn‘t returned. Erik sets off
for the big Viking port He- deby in search of his brother, but no one there has heard any news of Leif or his ship, the Whale Rider. Just as Erik is beginning to give up hope, a
dragon ship appears on the horizon.

We accompany Erik on his journey and learn what the Viking community looked like, which gods they worshipped, why the raids they led with their fast ships were so
successful for such a long time, and why they loved hair combs. We attend a Viking feast, watch a ship being built, and look over the shoulders of merchants and craftspeople.
An atmospheric non-fiction picture book about these legendary northeners and about the successful outcome of an adventurous journey. With impres- sive illustrations and
exciting information about the life and culture of Vikings, who, contrary to their reputation, were not only menacing pirates but also farmers, merchants, seafarers, and
explorers.

Carve patterns on stones, shells and bones, drawings in the sand and messages on birch barks: Our ancestors already had the desire to use simple or even complicated characters to communicate with each other . Animals of the Night

Eule, Fuchs und Fledermaus
The sun is going down and all animals prepare to rest for the night. All animals? No! A lot of them spring into action just when the day ends. With Thomas Müller‘s detailed, luminous illustrations we become a part of the nightlife and follow owl, beaver, lynx and moth. We discover which animal leaves its hideout in the forest, near the lake, in a garden or in the city to start living its secret life in the cover of darkness. We learn amazing knowledge about the particular activities and abilities of nocturnal animals, e.g. how a cat is able to see through darkness, or how the echolocation of the bat functions, and what kind of trick the Eurasian bittern employs to become invisible.

Christmas Chaos in a Cheerful Blended Family - What a Gift!
December is the loveliest month in the year - and certainly the most stressful, at least when planning gifts for everyone in a 41-person blended family. Even when that particular problem is solved (thanks to a lucky inspiration), there are lots of challenges to meet before all the Christmas trees, holiday meals and presents have reached their final destinations. But no matter how much hustle and bustle goes into the preparations, by the time of the snowball fight - complete with stale dumplings from Christmas dinner - everyone -- robbers, princesses and dragon children alike - is filled with the Christmas spirit. This is an action-packed, jolly Christmas tale with enchanting highlights for everyone -- not just blended families.

Felix and His Monster

Felix und sein Monster
Monster Alert!

Felix would be content with life, and with himself, if he just weren't so afraid! He often has this feeling that something scary is lurking ahead. He gets spooked easily and then he worries about what the other kids will think of him. Then one day he gets into a terrible rage about this fear he can't shake. He takes it out in wild scribbling on a piece of paper. What's left is a monster! A super-cool monster!

Henrike Wilson writes with great sensitivity about finding the courage to face one's fears. A book about courage and friendship - and a very special monster!

What greater delight for a child than to lie sprawled out on the floor in front of a big picture-book, with hundreds of familiar and unfamiliar things to discover?
Rotraut Susanne Berner has designed just such a book whose large-format pictures show a whole town and its surroundings: a house for several families, a farm, a rail way station, a community centre, a market place, a multi storey department store, and a large park. These pictures tell many little stories of things that happen to people and animals on a spring day, and every child can follow these stories. And since there are plenty of stories to tell about this town throughout the year Rotraut Susanne Berner designed a book for each season. So now everybody can discover for himself how life in the town and its surroundings changes over the year: What kind of games children play and how long it takes for the construction work on the new nursery to be completed.

The countless stories told in Rotrauts Susanne Berners Wimmel books have been classic for years. Their wide range of possible applications have also made them popular in preschools, schools, and in speech therapy classrooms. This Wimmel Wordbooks support speech and language acquisition in a brilliant new way - in these editions, every familiar page has an additional margin in which 12-16 objects from the scene are depicted again and named with articles. Five Nuts, Squirreled Away

Fünf Nüsse für Eichhörnchen
It's fall! The leaves whirl in the wind and the squirrel is beginning to stockpile nuts for the winter. So far, five nuts have been gathered. The squirrel wants to hide them where no one will find them. It does so with great enthusiasm and finds excellent hiding spots. However, it was working with such zeal that it, unlike the reader, didn't notice that other animals were watching the whole time. When winter comes and everything's covered by a thick blanket of snow, the cheerful little squirrel tries to gather its nuts—only to find that the first four have apparently grown legs and escaped! Luckily the fifth and best nut (the one with the tiny hat!) is still there in its fantastic hiding place.
So it's no problem that the other animals helped themselves to his supply.
A book about the art of finding pleasure in what you do have instead of worrying about what you don't. But this is also a story about garden animals and the changing of the seasons, with all its many marvels—lovingly told with atmospheric illustrations by Henrike Wilson.

Pretty Darn Boring!

Ganz schön langweilig!
A little bear trots through the forest and isn’t quite sure where to go. He’s bored and
no one has time for him- everyone’s busy. At last, he lies down on the forest floor
and decides to do nothing- absolutely nothing. And even though he isn’t occupied,
lots of things are happening. Slowly but surely he begins to feel calm and his senses
begin to awaken. He begins to pay attention to the sounds around him and to feel,
see, sense, and discover more and more. His head feels free, his curiosity is
awakened, and lots of new ideas begin to come to him. Entertained and restored, he
starts off on his next adventure.
In a time in which even kindergartners need weekly planners and everyone always
has something to do (at least on a tablet or the like), Henrike Wilson remembers the
value and necessity of boredom and free, unstructured time, and pays homage to
these with vivid visuals. The ability to enjoy aimless time can be so fulfilling.

I Was Sitting in My Room One Night...

Ich war einmal abends...
„I was sitting in my room one night, all snug and comfy, when there was a knock on
the door. Now, who might it be …. my friend!“
Now, that’s as snug and promising a beginning to a never-ending book as one could
wish for, isn’t it? The bear gets a visit from the fox, who is in turn visited by the
hare, the squirrel goes to see the hare and is visited by the owl. And the owl? Well,
the owl is comfortably ensconced in her wing chair knitting happily away until
Kingdom come. But who could ever be in need of such a long scarf as this? Well, if it
isn’t her friend, the big brown bear, whom we’ve already met at the very beginning!
Henrike Wilson’s cosy pictures tell a story that is no less exciting for being simple,
and which never really comes to an end. Not only will the readers enjoy guessing
who it might be now knocking on the door, but they’ll be amazed at what all those
animals of the forest will get up to of a night, how and where they live, and how glad
they are to have their friends over. This is a great book about friendship, and about
the art of storytelling - you couldn’t ask more for a bedtime story!

Why Great-Grandfather August Wears Blue and White Socks and Can Dance Like a Champion

When Julia arrives in Gross Neuendorf, August is waiting for her at the bus stop. Joyfully he tosses his hat into the air. "We'll do something special every day!" he says happily. Julia likes to sit on the bench in August's workshop watching him as he works. August tells her about earlier times - like when he was a ferryman on the river. Sometimes Tim comes to visit. Then they all go fishing. When August gets tired, Julia sits on his bed and tucks him in. Back in school, Julia's thoughts often return to August. One afternoon in October Julia and her mother return to Gross Neuendorf. Lying on the hat rack is a cross with a bow . . .

A lovely story about the things that bind together the very young and the very old.

Kleine Schwester, große Schwester
Ada is still small. Small ears, small nose, small hands, small feet. Just like a little sister. And as it is with little sisters, their little heads are full of big ideas. On Monday, Ada decides that she would rather be a little elephant. With a big trunk. On Tuesday, she wishes she had the matching elephant ears to go with it, and so it continues merrily through the week. But suddenly, when something goes wrong for Ada the elephant, she's gone or is she?
Julie Völk tells the story of two sisters in clear, reduced images with bright color accents. In doing so, she cleverly combines "pretend play" with the relationship between the two. As clear and focused as the story is, as strong is the homage to play and the childlike imagination.

Maria Sibylla Merian

Maria Sibylla Merian
The Famous Naturalist - Profiled for Children

In 1699 Maria Sibylla Merian travels to the tropical rainforest in Surinam. Accompanied only by her daughter Dorothea, she commences her great ambition: observing and drawing insects in every stage of their development. For years, Sibylla has been fascinated by the way caterpillars transform into gorgeous butterflies. This book recounts the childhood of the famous artist and naturalist; of her courageous journeys into ancient forests, and of the origin of her stunning books that even today have no equal.

Simple text boxes contain facts and background details appropriate for young readers. Lively illustrations stimulate our interest in the magical world of insects and the life of an unusual, self-confident woman.

My Friend Otto, the Blue Wonder, and I

Mein Freund Otto, das Blaue Wunder und ich
Our Summer is Not Swimming!

At eight in the morning, the air is already warm and sweet-smelling. Matti is finally allowed to go barefoot, and it's clear that summer is here! There's nothing better than going to the pool! But, as Matti and Otto stand before the entrance, the Blue Wonder is closed. There's no money to renovate it. Where do they go now? The pool is the answer to every, yes every question in the summertime! Otto and Matti decide they've got to do something! In the end, the swimming pool belongs to everyone, especially the children.
A summertime story with an urban setting about adults who give up too easily and kids that take charge. It's about endless summer days at the most beautiful swimming pool in the city and about how together, things go easier, even if once in a while someone has to break the rules.

My Friend Otto, the Big Secret and I

Mein Freund Otto, das große Geheimnis und ich
It’s going on a lot in Matti’s and Otto’s lives. Matti has a VERY strange feeling when he’s looking at Mina, who is the new girl in their class and very good in playing soccer. Recently Otto has begun to comb his hair. And as if that was not strange enough, Matti’s dad suddenly appears in front of their door, the dad who didn’t get in touch with him for more than five years. But Otto’s mum moves out. For now.
To make friends with Mina is a little bit difficult, because she doesn’t even want to tell where she lives. However Matti and Otto want to give her extra lessons in Math, so that she won’t be bothered by the horrible Misses “Streiter” anymore. A great mess for the two boys. But they absolutely need to find out what’s wrong with Mina…
A modern city children story about boys in love, parents without any plans and tough girls. About “Hotte Zimmermann”, “Bruda Berlin” and the “Horrific Twins”. A story about big secrets and great emotions.

My Friend Otto, the Wild Life and I

Mein Freund Otto, das wilde Leben und ich
"Otto once said that our lives are far too tame and since then I've been thinking about the wild life. Maybe he was right. But if he was right, then what should we do?"
Matti and Otto have known each other their whole lives, except for the first three weeks. They live in a place where everyone goes on vacation: downtown Berlin. They go to yoga and play the piano. Matti laughs all the time and Otto can't sing. So everything's pretty normal – too normal??? One day at school they discover a video of Brotha Berlin rapping on YouTube and decide that something's got to change!
The only question is how ... A big-city story for the children of today. It's a tale about friendship, oddball teachers and weirdo neighbors, real estate sharks and dangerous gangsters, mothers and fathers – in other words, the wild life!

Wimmlingen at Night - The latest marvel from Rotraut Susanne Berner

Rotraut Susanne Berner's Wimmlingen at Night

Nighttime in Wimmlingen: Humans and animals are sleeping. Most of them, that is. Andrea, for one, cannot sleep because Thomas, who lives on the next floor, is taking a shower. Nico, on the other hand, is fast asleep in his cage, in the dark under its cloth cover. Outside, bats are flitting about, and a hedgehog shuffles through the grass. There's an all-night reading marathon taking place at the Public Library, and in the upper floor, the terrariums of the reptile exposition emit a greenish glow. At the station the night train is ready for departure.
Even though not all that many people are about at night, yet there is a lot going on in this warm summer night. Under cover of darkness, a burglar breaks into a dentist's surgery. Will he make his escape undetected? A night-watchman and his dog are on their round patrolling the local department store. Yet the highlight and concluding episode of this particular adventure must surely be the big festival in the municipal park, complete with fireworks.
As in her four previous books set in Wimmlingen, Rotraut Susanne Berner has once more come up with a cornucopia of little stories, rich in well-observed detail, an atmospheric nocturne that will make for splendid bedtime reading, for big and small alike.

Happy Penguins

Pinguin im Glück
Joy is Contagious!

It's the scene at the Pole: a penguin standing. Here comes another, wearing a scarf. Then another, with a cap. They stand together that way as the winter wind blows. Then comes another, passing all the others by. One that follows its beak and clearly has a goal in mind. That runs and does a cannonball splash into the blue water, just for fun! Have you ever heard of such a thing? Luckily, joy is contagious, and pretty soon all the penguins are romping around in the water, splashing and snorting. We'd love to join them.
It's hard to imagine a funnier, more focused depiction of a transformation from gloom into pure joy and happiness. Warning: it's contagious!
