Mehrdad Zaeri: Wer küsst wen?
Mehrdad Zaeri

Who kisses Whom?

Wer küsst wen?
Is it a game? Is it a story? Is it art? It's a book full of drawings that tell stories without words. In 232 pictures we meet the most unusual people, experience their city by day and by night, and we're constantly surprised with new insights and points of view. 232 pictures, all of them connected in this way and that way.

Here's a traveler wearing a hat and carrying a suitcase full of secrets - where's he headed? Those people waiting for the bus at Kiss Street - do they know each other? Does Knut Konrad always wear checkered pants? And who's that kissing Eleonore, the woman selling grilled bananas?

Thanks to the divided foldout pages, the pictures can be combined endlessly in different ways. This is a poetic picture-art adventure by the exceptional artist Mehrdad Zaeri.

La nonna la cucina la vita

La nonna La cucina La vita
“My childhood is redolent with the perfumes of Liguria. My memories seems to have sealed in the scents of the sea and of wood, of rosemary and sage, not forgetting moth-balls and spirit, and to guard it like a treasure. This gave me the idea to write a cookery book with recipes of my nonna, my grandmother, along with personal recollections and pictures. The book gathers a number of simple, delicious, traditional dishes, that were the staple of my Italian family. Yet some more elaborate, exquisite recipes for festive occasions can also be found. So enjoy the trip to my nonna’s Finale Ligure, the coastal strip between Genoa and the French border.”

Count yourself to Bed, little brat

Zähl dich nett ins Bett
Going to bed can be so much fun- there’s so much to experience along the way! One small bat flies with you up the stairs, two brightly colored fish lead you to your room, ten long-armed octopuses tuck you in, and eleven sleepy little beavers cuddle with you…
Daniela Kulot’s fanciful counting and bedtime book invites reading aloud and rhyming together and teaches easy counting from 1 to 12.
A reference column on the left side of the page explains the numbers with digits, words, and pictures. Here even very small children can develop a sense for quantities.
Besides, who says that you have to count sheep to fall asleep?

Wimmlingen at Night - The latest marvel from Rotraut Susanne Berner

Rotraut Susanne Berner's Wimmlingen at Night

Nighttime in Wimmlingen: Humans and animals are sleeping. Most of them, that is. Andrea, for one, cannot sleep because Thomas, who lives on the next floor, is taking a shower. Nico, on the other hand, is fast asleep in his cage, in the dark under its cloth cover. Outside, bats are flitting about, and a hedgehog shuffles through the grass. There's an all-night reading marathon taking place at the Public Library, and in the upper floor, the terrariums of the reptile exposition emit a greenish glow. At the station the night train is ready for departure.
Even though not all that many people are about at night, yet there is a lot going on in this warm summer night. Under cover of darkness, a burglar breaks into a dentist's surgery. Will he make his escape undetected? A night-watchman and his dog are on their round patrolling the local department store. Yet the highlight and concluding episode of this particular adventure must surely be the big festival in the municipal park, complete with fireworks.
As in her four previous books set in Wimmlingen, Rotraut Susanne Berner has once more come up with a cornucopia of little stories, rich in well-observed detail, an atmospheric nocturne that will make for splendid bedtime reading, for big and small alike.

Up the wooden Hills to Bedfordshire - Rhyme-wise

Reim dich nett ins Bett
Time to go to sleep - but there’s lots of things to discover on your way to bed. Such as a mouse removing - a louse.

Kids just love rhymes, especially when read to them by a grown-up. This book invites you to read the rhymes aloud, and to make up a few of your own. What’s more, its colourful, imaginative pages just bristle with all kinds of funny little surprising details which children will discover with glee. To round things off, the icon bar on the left page provides a beginner’s pictorial dictionary listing each of the rhyming words next to a picture of the object referred to.

A wonderful bedtime book, one to be read aloud to the kids and a cornucopia of rhymes, all rolled into one – makes going to bed fun three times over!

Frühlings-Wimmelbuch - Midi
What greater delight for a child than to lie sprawled out on the floor in front of a big picture-book, with hundreds of familiar and unfamiliar things to discover?
Rotraut Susanne Berner has designed just such a book whose large-format pictures show a whole town and its surroundings: a house for several families, a farm, a rail way station, a community centre, a market place, a multi storey department store, and a large park. These pictures tell many little stories of things that happen to people and animals on a spring day, and every child can follow these stories. And since there are plenty of stories to tell about this town throughout the year Rotraut Susanne Berner designed a book for each season. So now everybody can discover for himself how life in the town and its surroundings changes over the year: What kind of games children play and how long it takes for the construction work on the new nursery to be completed.

Luckily, Linus' father Oliver put up a tent last night, so the party can continue. Anyone who looks closely can see that not just the children are celebrating - there are some animal creatures enjoying the party too!

Everything's Nicer When We're Together - A Christian Morgenstern Poem for Young Ones

Die Drei Spatzen (The Three Sparrows) is probably Morgenstern's most popular poem for children. Its simple message stirs children and adults alike even today. Philip Waechter's illustrations bring us close to the three small sparrows - so close that we can almost see their tiny hearts beating. There they sit cozily, the three sparrows on their branch, despite the snow and the cold, trusting that one day soon they'll fly again in the springtime sun. . .

I Was Sitting in My Room One Night...

Ich war einmal abends...
„I was sitting in my room one night, all snug and comfy, when there was a knock on
the door. Now, who might it be …. my friend!“
Now, that’s as snug and promising a beginning to a never-ending book as one could
wish for, isn’t it? The bear gets a visit from the fox, who is in turn visited by the
hare, the squirrel goes to see the hare and is visited by the owl. And the owl? Well,
the owl is comfortably ensconced in her wing chair knitting happily away until
Kingdom come. But who could ever be in need of such a long scarf as this? Well, if it
isn’t her friend, the big brown bear, whom we’ve already met at the very beginning!
Henrike Wilson’s cosy pictures tell a story that is no less exciting for being simple,
and which never really comes to an end. Not only will the readers enjoy guessing
who it might be now knocking on the door, but they’ll be amazed at what all those
animals of the forest will get up to of a night, how and where they live, and how glad
they are to have their friends over. This is a great book about friendship, and about
the art of storytelling - you couldn’t ask more for a bedtime story!

Turn left... straight ahead... to the right... straight ahead... to the left... Meercat keeps a beady eye (or rather two) on his surroundings. He admires his neighbours in the zoo: The chimpanzees who fool around all day long, the bears who are so strong, and, of course, the King of all animals, the lion. And he dreams of being like these animals. If only he knew how much these very animals admire him the sheer surprise would probably send him toppling into the next groundhole. As it is, this smart and nimble little chap remains their secret hero - after all, nobody is quite as alert and quick as him.

The Big Word Wimmelbook

Das große Wörterwimmelbuch
The stories told in Rotraut Susanne Berner's Wimmelbooks have become classics. This large Wimmelbook invites the reader to accompany the Wimmlingers on their adventures through winter, spring, summer, fall, and a summer night.
On the bottom of each double-page spread, a border depicts and names various things from the respective Wimmel picture. The selected items on the margin relate to a different theme on each page. In this way, the Wimmel books support language acquisition in a playful way.

Lemon Yellow And Fire Red

Zitronengelb und Feuerrot
In this small, thick colour book, Sabine Lohf has created 50 imaginative pictures that introduce children to the world of colours in a playful way. Be it a frog green frog king or a feather white chick, a little ship in a sea blue sea or a chalk white snowman every page holds a new surprise. What other colours might there be? And maybe big and small people will paint their own colourful pictures to go with them?
This visual school, which at the same time promotes language, is fun for even the youngest children and opens up the colourful world to them. And it encourages painting and crafting!

Recommended as a visual school and for language development.

Say 'Thank You', You Frog!

Sag mal DANKE, du Frosch!
Everyone says "Thank you". Just a little word, but the little frog just can't get it past his lips! Not when the nice fly seller hands him a delicious snake over the counter. Not even when he gets lots of great birthday presents. But you can't have that, can you?
A tongue-in-cheek and warm-hearted story about two little words with a big meaning.
Julie Völk
Kleine Schwester, große Schwester
Ada is still small. Small ears, small nose, small hands, small feet. Just like a little sister. And as it is with little sisters, their little heads are full of big ideas. On Monday, Ada decides that she would rather be a little elephant. With a big trunk. On Tuesday, she wishes she had the matching elephant ears to go with it, and so it continues merrily through the week. But suddenly, when something goes wrong for Ada the elephant, she's gone or is she?
Julie Völk tells the story of two sisters in clear, reduced images with bright color accents. In doing so, she cleverly combines "pretend play" with the relationship between the two. As clear and focused as the story is, as strong is the homage to play and the childlike imagination.
Stephanie Schneider, Henrike Wilson: Tambo, der kleine Elefant

Tambo is thoroughly fed up with always being the smallest. After all, he’s an elephant! He will prove to everyone how big he is. He will scare a tiger away! He and his friend the bird prepare the courage test. But no one shows up, not even a tiger. With drooping ears, Tambo sadly trudges back to the herd. There they all are, the big elephants. And there’s his Mom. Big and grey and dear as always. Next to her, a newborn elephant baby looks at Tambo full of curiosity. Now Tambo feels all the way down to the end of his trunk how wonderful it is to be a needed and looked up to as an older brother. And he thinks it’s grand that he’s no longer the littlest in the herd!

1,2,3,...A Sack Full of Buttons

1, 2, 3...ein Sack voller Knöpfe
Button by button, Sabine Lohf and Yvonne Hergane help to make the Advent season before Christmas go by quickly. Lots of buttons have fallen out of Santa’s big sack, and now they’re being put to use as wheels for a puppet carriage, as eyes for a teddy bear, or for a funny snowball
fight. On each day of advent a button is added, until 24 of them decorate the Christmas tree.

Sabine Lohf has created tongue-in-cheek illustrations for Yvonne Hergane’s clever rhymes. This book is not only great for counting but also offers many colourful ideas for Christmas time: making button garlands, painting wishlists, polishing Santa’s boots, and much more.
